Grading is the difference between dirt that works and dirt that fights you. Most grading calls start with water: a crawl space that smells like a creek, a yard that squishes into June, a driveway that washes every storm. The fix is almost never a gadget — it is grade. We reshape the ground so water falls away from the house, rides a swale around the yard instead of through it, and leaves the driveway in sheets instead of channels.
Middle Tennessee clay makes this matter more, not less. It sheds water fast once it seals, which is why a lot with the wrong fall floods the same corner every time. Getting positive fall — a steady drop away from the structures — set into the dirt is the whole game, and it is machine work, not shovel work.
A building pad is only as good as its compaction. We cut pads for houses, barns, shops and arenas, bench them into slopes where the ground rolls, bring in the right fill, and compact it in lifts so the concrete crew is pouring on ground that will not move. The same goes for gravel drives: shaped base, crowned surface, and ditching that gives the water somewhere to go — that is why ours last.
On the finish end, we regrade torn-up yards after construction, spread screened topsoil, and leave the surface smooth enough to seed. If the project starts in the brush, the same crew handles the clearing first, so you are not coordinating two contractors to get one yard.
Williamson County ground rolls, and a lot of it runs shallow to limestone. That combination punishes guesswork: cut in the wrong place and you are in rock, fill in the wrong place and it settles.
